About the business area

Commercial Banking is our business-to-business offering, helping businesses of all sizes to grow - from small enterprises to large multinationals. We provide expert advice and essential services dependent on business needs. These could include trade finance, global payments, multi-currency accounts, commercial cards and insurance, alongside many others.

Who you are

You’re someone who enjoys building trust, supporting others and making a real impact. You don’t need to know everything about banking yet — bring your curiosity, initiative and willingness to learn, and we’ll help you build the rest. You could be a great fit if you communicate clearly, build relationships naturally and stay organised when things move quickly. You work well with others, pay attention to detail and adapt when priorities shift. You take ownership, look for solutions and care about doing good work. You’re also self-aware and motivated to keep growing. If helping clients succeed sounds energising — and you like the idea of learning in a relationship-led environment — this could be a strong fit.

What you'll do

From day one, you’ll work with Relationship Managers and specialist teams to support Commercial Banking clients. You’ll help build an understanding of each client’s business, goals and challenges, and see how HSBC brings together the right expertise to respond. You could support client presentations, reports and credit papers, help with strategic reviews and pitches, and carry out financial analysis and risk assessments on portfolios and transactions. You’ll also work with colleagues across Legal, Credit and Risk, and see how teams collaborate across functions and geographies to deliver tailored solutions. It’s practical, relationship-led work that gives you real exposure to how client partnerships are built and supported.

What you'll learn

You’ll build a practical understanding of relationship management in commercial banking, starting with how client needs, profitability and risk are balanced in real situations. Through your internship, you’ll strengthen your commercial awareness, learn how different teams work together to support clients, and begin to understand how banking solutions are shaped around business goals. You’ll also develop your confidence in a professional environment by learning from colleagues and seeing how relationship-led careers work day to day. The focus is on helping you connect what you’re seeing to the bigger picture of commercial banking. By the end, you’ll have a clearer sense of how this area fits together—and where you could fit within it.

Where you'll work

You’ll work in Commercial Banking, in a relationship-led environment supporting business clients through close teamwork and specialist expertise. You’ll be part of a collaborative office culture where Relationship Managers work closely with colleagues across Credit, Risk and Legal to deliver joined-up support. It’s a professional setting that values trust, communication and strong internal partnerships. Expect exposure to a business area where client relationships sit at the centre and teamwork makes the difference.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible, you must:

Available to work full time for 10 weeks commencing June 2027
Will have completed studies by July 2028
On-track to obtain a minimum of a 2:1 undergraduate degree (or overseas equivalent to this)
Be in your penultimate year of undergraduate study
Fluent in English
Legally permitted to work in the UK for the full duration of the programme and beyond the end date, without requiring HSBC visa sponsorship

This programme is considered a conversion route to the Commercial Banking Graduate Programme, which, in turn, does not satisfy the Home Office eligibility criteria for visa sponsorship. We therefore can only progress applications from candidates who can demonstrate that they are eligible to work in the UK without HSBC sponsorship for the full duration of, and beyond, the graduate programme end date.

We cannot progress applications from candidates who apply with a student visa as you would not be eligible for sponsorship by HSBC when your current visa expires. You will need to confirm what visa you hold, if any, and its expiry date when you apply for us to verify your eligibility.

Please provide your achieved or expected final undergraduate degree result using the grading system used by your university (e.g. 2:1, First Class, GPA 3.5/4.0, 75% or local equivalent).

Additional information

We only accept one application per recruitment cycle so please take time to explore our opportunities before applying as we may not be able to transfer your application to other vacancies.

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis and we may close this vacancy earlier than the advertised closing date if we receive a high volume of applications. Please apply as soon as possible to be considered.
